Inside the SSI Navigation Course
This program is a perfect blend of digital learning and hands-on underwater challenges. It typically includes two specialized open-water dives.
1. Theory & Tools
Compass Mastery: Learn to set bearings, navigate reciprocal courses (out and back), and swim complex patterns like squares and triangles.
Natural Navigation: Master the “art” of using environmental clues—sunlight, sand ripples, current direction, and coral formations—to find your way.
Distance Estimation: Learn to accurately judge distance using kick cycles, time, or visual landmarks.
2. Practical Skills Underwater
Mapping the Site: Practice creating a mental or sketched map of the dive site while swimming.
Pattern Practice: Execute precise 180-degree turns and multi-heading patterns under instructor supervision.
Buoyancy Integration: Navigation requires focus; you will learn to maintain perfect buoyancy while managing your compass and watching your surroundings.
